On March 2, 1933, the Dying Green Lantern named Abin Sur told his Power Ring to find him a worthy successor, one who was without fear! At that moment the giant ape named Kong was fighting off biplane attacks atop the Empire State Building, when he was enveloped in Emerald Energy and transported to the Nevada crash site of Abin Sur's space ship.

Through the Ring's power Abin Sur communicated to the Mighty Ape his mission of justice, and Kong became the Green Lantern of Earth!
