This is something that requires a little history and background. When I was younger, looking into the making of King Kong, I came upon some startling renderings. It was my introduction to the idea of 'production art', and they inspired me. I'm talking about the art of Mario Larrinaga, Byron Crabbe, and Ernest Smythe. These guys were the production artists and designers/previz guys (though no such term existed) on King Kong. They have created magnificent sketches and paintings that were perfectly realized by Willis O'Brien and his crew.
In the spirit of 'remakes' I have often wondered about playing with some of these illustrations. So, I did. What I have here is a strange hybrid, part 'reconstruction', part 'update', part 'fantasy'. I'm not really sure what I did, actually. I had a lot of fun doing it. I actually used some of the original sketch to set into the painting. I did this in the spirit of fun, and mean no disrespect at all to Mr. Larrinaga's original work, it's a labor of love.
