(KiKn) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1 Latest News
1.1 I
just saw/read/watched/found out something cool about King Kong! How do I let the site know about it? The process is really easy; simply send an
email to spymaster@kongisking.net.
1.2 I submitted an item to the
site and it was posted, but my username was not mentioned. Why?
In some instances, an item submitted is already known, has already
been submitted by another, or has been submitted simultaneously by multiple
individuals; in such cases, the site administrators will post the item using
their own username.
1.3 Where can I find old news
items? Is there a news archive? Yes, there is a news archive and you can
find it by clicking on the text link found at the bottom of the home page that
says: “Missed some news? Visit our King Kong News Archive.”
1.4 Who makes the Post Production
Diaries (PPD’s)? The post production
diaries are created by the same team who worked on The Lord of the Rings
behind-the-scenes features. They are
also worked on the DVD features for King Kong.
1.4.1 Who owns the PPD’s? The PPD’s are owned by Universal
Studios/Big Primate Pictures. KongIsKing.net holds
the exclusive rights to publish and distribute them on the web.
1.4.2 When and how often do PPD’s
come out? As the movie has long been released, the answer to this is never ;). But when it was in production, PDs arrived about twice a week, and PPDs arrived once a week.
1.4.3 How do I ask a question
for the PPD's? You don't - the movie is out. However, back in the day, the KiK.n website was lucky enough to be able to collect questions from fans, and have them read by Peter Jackson in one of the production diaries.
1.4.4 Did the PPD's continue
after principal photography ended?
Yes! Post Production Diaries began
at “33 weeks to go” and continued
through to the film’s world premiere. They were welcomed
by Kong fans and film enthusiasts worldwide, and there was even a secret extra production diary on the King Kong Extended DVD!
1.4.5 Will the PD’s be included
on a special DVD? Yes. The PPDs were included on the King Kong DVD.
1.4.6 What software do I need to
view a PPD? You will need
software called QuickTime Player to view the Post Production Diaries. You may download this software for free by
visiting http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download.
1.4.7 The PPD won't play. What am I doing wrong? You may need QuickTime Player, which is
free software you may download from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download.
1.4.8 A PPD just came out, but I
can't view/download the large (480x264px) one. Why?
As the movie has been out for some time, we would love to hear of a new production diary that just came out. ;) However, a frequent question from users was that they could not get to them right away. The reason for this was that the PPD’s were received and then uploaded to a fileserver, which then
needed time to sync up to the download links … the higher quality, larger file
always took a bit longer to sync up – but usually did within 30
minutes of the link appearing on the home page.
1.4.9 What is BitTorrent? BitTorrent is a protocol designed for
transferring files, where users connect to each other directly to send and
receive portions of the file and a central server (called a tracker)
coordinates the action. The tracker
only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of
the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be
supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. For more information, please visit http://bittorrent.com.
1.4.10 Where can I find PPD’s
that I’ve missed? A complete
listing of Post Production Diaries may be found by at http://www.kongisking.net/kong2005/proddiary.
1.4.11 May I keep copies of the
PPD’s on my local computer? Yes.
1.4.12 May I host copies of the
PPD’s on my own web site? Yes, but not without express written
consent from the owners of KongIsKing.net.

Index page. You will see a
text link at the top of this page that says: ‘If you are not a member, Sign up here!’ Simply click on that link, fill in the
information requested, and press [Signup!].
You will receive an email, which you must respond to in order for your
registration to be validated. Please

do I do now? Click the [Log In] link on the message board top
menu and then click on the text link that says: “Lost your password?” The KiKn message boards will generate a new

After logging in the temporary password will be lost, so you should
change your password immediately upon logging in with the temporary
password.

wouldn’t I want to use them when signing in? A “cookie” is a bit of data stored on your
computer through your web browser that allows a website to keep track of your
settings and other information (such as your member username and
password). They are generally not a
security risk, and only allow your browser to send the data back to the
server that originally set it. Reasons
you might not want to store cookies on the computer you are using include (1)
other sites may scan them and keep track of where you have been; and (2) it
may allow others who have access to the computer you are using to log on to
KiKn, to then log on to KiKn as you

computer that is shared by other users, such as in a library, school,
Internet cafe or office.

profile? After logging in, click on the [Edit Profile] link on the message board
top menu. Then click on [User Profile] and change what you want to

my user profile? To add a

in mind when posting: no swearing, cursing, harassment or other such
foolishness; no image banners or advertisements for other sites are
permitted; make sure you post according to the name of the forum (i.e., King
Kong 1933 discussion should be limited to the Film History board); and be
friendly and patient with each other … after all, we are just having fun!
5.20 Are there board
moderators? Yes, the message
boards at KongisKing.net are moderated.
5.20.1 Who are the board

moderator? Possibly, but there
might be a large cash payoff involved.
;o)
5.21 How do I post a new
message? Once you are in a
thread you just reply to the post you want to answer. The “Reply” text link is in the upper right
hand of each post. If you would like
to start a new thread, go to the forum where you wish to place your post and
click on the [Post New] link found in the upper right hand corner of the
page.
5.21.1 Where can I get markup
help? Markup help is available
by visiting markup help. The Advanced Editor is also available when
using the most popular web browsers, such as Internet Explorer.
5.21.2 What are the icons above
the subject field used for?
When used, these icons will appear next to the subject of your post in
a given thread and may be used to add particular emphasis or reflect a mood.

know what each button does. These
buttons, when pressed, are used to format text, insert links and images, etc.
5.21.5 How do I add a picture to
a post? There are a couple of ways to add a picture
to your post. If the image you want to
post is already on the Internet, we recommend you first save the image to
your PC (please do not link directly to
images found on other websites as this ties up server bandwidth on those
sites, slowing them down and costing those sites visitors and money) and
then upload it to your own website if you have one or to a free image hosting
service such as or http://www.imageshack.us/ or http://tinypic.com. You can then insert the image URL by
clicking on the picture icon on the Advanced Editor toolbar, or using image
tags using the Basic Editor (see markup help). You also have an option of uploading the
image to your post as an attachment.
5.21.6 What is a spoiler tag and
how should it be used? If you
believe the information in your post might be something that people do not
what to know about before seeing a movie, playing a video game, watching a
television show or reading a book, it is best to use a Spoiler Tag. The tags are self-explanatory, and you can
write your own message about what you are spoiling in the box labeled ‘What
does it spoil?’ As a reminder, be
careful not to place any spoilers in your subject!!
NOTE: If your spoiler is related to the
upcoming King Kong movie, you have the choice to post this information freely
in the Spoiler Forum rather than use Spoiler
Tags in another forum.
5.21.7 How do I upload an
attachment? To add an
attachment to your post you must first compose your post. Then click on [Browse] next to the
Attachment box. Find the file you want
to attach to your post and click on [Open].
Click on [Upload Attachment].
Then, you must click on either [Post Message] if your post is starting
a new thread, or [Post Reply] if you are replying to
an existing thread. Please note that
attachments must be 250 kilobytes or smaller.
5.21.8 Why can’t I use the
Advanced Editor when using Firefox as my
browser? Firefox does not support the Advanced Editor feature at
this time. You can write your post in
Word or Notepad or any other word processing software, and then copy and
paste it into the Firefox box, if you would like
more editing features or see markup help.
5.21.9 Oops! I made a mistake … can I fix it? In both the Spoiler Forum and the Fan Art
Forum you have an unlimited amount of time in which to edit your post. In all the other forums you have only 10
minutes to fix any mistakes. This is
called an Edit Window.
5.21.10 Why can’t I edit my
post? You missed the Edit Window, which is 10
minutes. If you want your post edited
and have missed the Edit Window, you can always contact the board moderator, who will do so for you.
5.21.11 Oops! I posted something in error … can I delete
it? In both the Spoiler Forum
and the Fan Art Forum you have an unlimited
amount of time in which to delete your post.
In all the other forums you have only 10 minutes to delete your
post. This is called an Edit Window.
5.21.12 Why can’t I delete my
post? You missed the Edit
Window, which is 10 minutes. If you
want your post deleted and have missed the Edit Window, you can always
contact the board moderator, who will do so for you.
5.22 My post is gone … why? If you never saw your post on the boards,
it is possible that the post never made it to the message board system - try
entering your post again. Or, it may be
that your post is there, but you need to refresh your browser to see the
newest list of posts. If your post was
there for some time, but is now gone, it is possible that it was removed by
one of the board administrators.
Usually, they will indicate as such in a new post under the same
thread as your deleted post. If this
is the case, you may send a Private Message to the
board moderator for further information. Please remember that the forum
administrators have the final say as to what posts are removed.
5.23 My post was moved … why? Sometimes a message posted in one forum may
be better suited for another. For example,
a post in the Main Discussion forum revealing a plot twist in the film may be
viewed as a spoiler, and therefore be moved to the Spoiler Forum. Similarly, comments or questions regarding
the site itself may be placed in the Feedback forum, and posts that have
nothing to do with Kong at all may be moved to the Off-Topic Subjects forum.
5.24 My post was edited by
someone … who can do that and why?
KiKn has board moderators who have the ability, and duty, to edit
posts based on rules outlined by the site’s owners. Typically, posts in are deleted rather than
edited; however, moderators may choose instead to remove words or images from
a post without changing the intent. If
you have any questions, you may contact the board moderator via Private Messaging.
5.25 I changed my avatar, and
now nobody can see my posts! What do I
do? Our forum software has an
unfortunate problem whereby images that are extremely large, or have some
other unusual properties, will make it so other users cannot see your posts
and instead see an error message saying: “The post you attempted to access
does not exist.” If this is the case,
before contacting anyone or posting another message, go into your User
Profile and either change your avatar to another image (typically, a smaller
one – avatars are displayed no larger than 100 pixels by 100 pixels, resizing
images accordingly before uploading is recommended), or remove the use of an
image entirely, by choosing ‘None’ as the edit option in the Edit Profile
screen (which you know how to use, as your have successfully changed your
avatar once already!). (Note: You may also need to log out and close your
browser to clear the browser cache, then open your browser and log back in
again before posting.) We recommend
you test your ability to post first by sending yourself a Private Message
rather than trying to post on the boards directly. Once you are able to read your Private
Message, then the problem is fixed and you should be able to post normally on
the boards.
5.26 How can I mark all new
messages as read? Click on the
[Main Index] link on the top message board
menu or go to http://boards.kongisking.net. Near the bottom left hand corner of the
screen, there will be a small line of text which explains that forums with
new posts are shown with yellow folders.
To the right of that is a link labeled "Mark all read." Click on that link and you’re done!
5.27 What are the different
ways to view the message boards?
There are two options for viewing each forum, [Collapsed View] and
[Expand All Threads]. The default is
set at [Expand All Threads]. You may
toggle between these views by clicking on the button located next to the
[Post New] button on the top of each message board. You can change the default setting by
clicking on the [Edit Profile] menu button on the top of each Message Board,
then clicking on [Display Settings] and changing the “Default Forum
View.”
5.28 What are the different
thread viewing modes? There
are two options for viewing threads, [View Threaded] and [View Flat
Mode]. The default is set at [View
Flat Mode]. You may toggle between
these views by clicking on the button that appears above the “Quote” and
“Reply” options when viewing a thread.
You can change the default setting by clicking on the [Edit Profile]
menu button, then clicking on [Display Settings] and then changing the “Default
Post Display.”
5.29 Is there a way to sort
messages by the newest post first?
Yes! When you view the lists of
threads within a forum, near the upper right corner of the list, in the
heading is one of two text links: either (creation) or (activity). If it is set to (activity), fortune has
smiled upon you: you are already looking at the messages with the newest post
first. If it is set to (creation), you
need only click on the word, and the threads will then appear in order of the
newest post first.
5.30 Is there a way to sort
messages by the newest thread first?
But of course! When you view
the lists of threads within a forum, near the upper right corner of the list,
in the heading is one of two words, in parenthesis: either (creation) or
(activity). If it is set to
(creation), life is good for you today: you are already looking at the
messages with the newest thread first.
If it is set to (activity), you must click on the word, and the
threads will then appear in order of which is the newest thread first.
5.31 When I click on a post, I
get an error saying “The post you attempted to access does not exist”, what
do I do? You should inform the
poster of the message in a Private Message of the error and direct them to
question 5.25 of
this FAQ.
5.31.1 How do I search for an
old post? At the top of each
Message Board screen, is a menu button option to [Search Posts]. Click on it, and enter the requested
information, then click [SEARCH]. This
allows you to customize your search.
If you just want to search for something in all forums, at the bottom
of every page is a handy place to do that.
Enter your search string in the box, and click on [SEARCH].
5.32 How can I see who is
online? Click on the [Who’s Online] link on the top message
board menu. Note that some users have
chosen to make themselves “invisible” in this list, so
people you want to find may be online, but hidden.
5.32.1 Is there a member
directory? Yes! Click on the [Who’s Online] link on the top message
board menu.
Then, click on the text link that says “View Member Directory,” which is located
just underneath the page title “Who’s Online” near the top of this
page. Near the top of this page, you
will also find an option to search for a user by alphabetically or by
specific username.
5.32.2 Can I sort the member
directory? Of course! At the top of the member directory is a
list of headers of each column. Click
on any heading name that is underlined and the directory will be sorted by
that heading.
5.32.3 I noticed that different users have different titles under their
usernames ... what do they mean and can I change mine? The titles listed under members’ usernames are
automatically assigned by the system and are based on the total number of
posts that a user has created on the various KiKn message boards. The current titles are assigned based on
the following post counts:
Up
to 5 posts: New User
Up
to 49 posts: Novice
Up
to 499 posts: SKIIP (This stands for SKull Island Indigenous Person)
Up
to 999 posts: Enthusiast
Beyond
that: Veteran
Fortunately, at this site,
these titles do not really carry any significance. They are not reflective of authority nor
carry any snobbish prestige, but rather, seeing a member reaching a new level
provides other members with an opportunity for camaraderie, often exhibited
in celebratory congratulations and impromptu board “parties” in the Off Topic
Subjects forum.
5.33 What is Private Messaging? Private Messaging is a way in which you may
send a private note to another board member without needing to exchange e-mail
addresses.
5.33.1 How do I send a private
message to someone? The
easiest way to send a private message is by clicking on a member’s username
either by one of their posts or through the member directory. When their User Profile appears, click the
[Send Private Message] button.
Alternatively, you can click on the [Your Mesgs]
menu button on the top of each message board page, then click [Send Private
Message] and select the text link that says “View Member Directory,” to choose a
username.
5.33.2 How do I read my private
messages? On the top message
board menu is link titled [Your Mesgs]. If you have a private message waiting for
you, this menu button will instead read [Mesgs #
new], where “#” will equal the number of new messages waiting for you. Click on this link and you will see both
private messages you have sent and ones you have received.
5.33.3 Can I turn off the
ability for someone to send me “Private Messages”? Yes.
Click on the [Edit Profile] link on the message board
top menu. Then click on [User Profile]. Once there, go to "Allow Private
Messages" and choose “No”.
5.33.4 Are private messages
really private, or can TPTB read them? A bit of a general statement about
computing: Technically, the administrators of a computing system can read
anything on that computing system. So,
while it is not a policy of KongIsKing.net to go through people's private
messages, one should always use discretion when sending messages through any
computing system. This advice is not
specific to KongIsKing.net, nor meant to imply anything about it. It is meant as generally good advice.
5.33.5 Do people who send me
private messages see my email address? No, they do not.
5.33.6 Is there a way I can be
notified via email that I have a private message waiting for me? Yes.
Click on the [Edit Profile] link on the message board
top menu. Then click on [User Profile]. Once there, go to the choice "Send
private message notification via e-mail" and choose “Yes”.
5.34 Why do some threads appear
to be on fire? A thread is considered a “hot topic” thread
(noted by a flaming icon beside each thread subject posted) when twenty
replies are made within the first 30 minutes of any new thread posted.

night. However, there may not be
anyone there to speak with. A weekly Kong

to enter Live Chat? The
